PhD position in Inversion of seismic data using advanced numerical methods

About This PhD Project

Project Description

Full, jointly-funded PhD, Delft University of Technology (http://www.delphi-consortium.com/) and the Cyprus Institute, to start February 2019.

The Cyprus Institute and Delft University of Technology
Supervisors: Prof. C. Alexandrou (CyI) ., Dr. E. Verschuur (DELFT) , Dr. Z.M. Nikolaou (CyI) .

This PhD project is in the field of seismic exploration in cooperation with the Delphi Consortium (Delft University of Technology). Specifically, the PhD project deals with migration/inversion of seismic data using novel techniques (Full Wavefield Migration/Joint Migration Inversion), for constructing accurate images of the sub-surface-an essential step in the upstream oil/gas industry for identifying potential hydrocarbon resources.

The position is for 4 years and it comes with a full scholarship covering tuition fees, salary and travelling costs. The project is jointly funded by the Delphi Consortium as Delft University of Technology (http://www.delphi-consortium.com/) and the Cyprus Institute. Due to the strong link with research within the Delphi Consortium, the successful Ph.D. candidate is expected to have regular visits to Delft University and the project results will be presented twice a year at the Delphi Consortium meeting in Houston (February) and The Hague (early June) to major oil/gas industrial sponsors. The project also involves participation in the training events and workshops that will be held within the STIMULATE program.

Applications are welcome from candidates worldwide, with strong analytical and numerical skills, and a relevant scientific background e.g. applied mathematics, physics, engineering, computer science.

Deadline for applications: applications will be accepted until position is filled

Expected starting date: February 2019
