About the Project

The Department of Physics at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) expects to fill a PhD position in quantum condensed matter theory. The student will be enrolled into the Graduate Program beginning in Fall 2022, and is expected to work with Profs. Aris Alexandradinata, Sriram Shastry, Sergey Syzranov on the physics of strongly correlated and topological quantum materials, disordered systems, and mesoscopics.

The main directions of the PhD projects are the development of a new paradigm for topological metals/insulators, finding their material realizations, and identifying their unique phenomenology (e.g., electromagnetic quantum/semiclassical effects), with an eye toward device applications in sustainable technologies (e.g., photovoltaics). Other possible research directions include the interplay of topological matter with new forms of magnetism and high-magnetic-field superconductivity, electron hydrodynamics in solid-state systems, transport in high-temperature superconductors, and the physics of quantum spin liquids. Students will have the opportunity to collaborate with theoretical materials chemist Yuan Ping and condensed-matter experimental groups led by David Lederman, Arthur Ramirez, Jairo Velasco and Aiming Yan, in the investigation of topological quantum and correlated materials.  

Santa Cruz is a picturesque town on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, with spring-like weather all year round, beautiful beaches, and redwood-forested mountains. The town is bike-friendly and within driving distance to Silicon Valley and several renowned Universities (Stanford, Berkeley, UC Santa Barbara), making UCSC ideal for collaborations with other Condensed Matter groups, and for having a constant stream of renowned seminar/colloquium speakers. In addition, the Materials Science and Engineering Initiative in UCSC offers the opportunity for inter-departmental collaborations between condensed-matter physicists and physical chemists at the intersection of sustainable technologies and topological materials.

UCSC is a minority-serving institution and encourages applications from international and minority backgrounds. A language competence test may be required depending on one’s background. GRE Physics testing is encouraged but not required.

In the first two years of the program, the student is expected to complete several core courses on Classical and Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Physics, Condensed Matter and Field Theories. A small teaching load (Teaching Assistantship) is expected in the first few years of the program, after which the majority of the program will be funded by our group.
