Project Description

At the Centre for Craniofacial and Regenerative Biology at King’s College London, a prestigious European Research Counsel (ERC) funded vacancy exists for a PhD student. The prospective PhD candidate will operate as part of the ERC team. The aim of the presently available PhD-position is to drive forward a new paradigm of Raman endoscopy technology that enables comprehensive molecular characterisation of bladder cancers. Raman spectroscopy is a label-free optical technique that can provide a point-wise vibrational molecular fingerprint of tissue “optical biopsy” for cancer diagnosis. We will here introduce novel methodologies to enable comprehensive analysis based on co-registered Raman spectroscopy/mass spectrometry and apply novel computational methods including deep learning to improve the molecular characterisation of bladder cancer. Talented and motivated students passionate about doing research are invited to apply for this PhD position.

The successful applicant will join a vibrant, multidisciplinary group in a fully equipped optics lab at King’s College London working on various aspects of optical microscopy, disease characterisation and translational biophotonics.

Research training
• The student will develop skills applied optics, microscopy, analytical characterisation, multivariate data analysis and deep learning.

Person specification:
• We are looking for candidates with a strong background in Physics, Optics, Biophysics, Biomedical and hands-on experience in optical laboratories.
• You have excellent analytical skills and an innate ability for solution-oriented problem solving;
• You have strong interests in bioimaging or medical technologies that can create impact on patients
• You have experience in constructing optical instruments, optical spectroscopy, optical microscopy, cell culture or tissue handling. Experience in multivariate data analysis, deep learning and programming will be considered as a benefit;
• You possess excellent social and communication skills, in academic as well as non-academic contexts.
• You like working interdisciplinary in a team in which fundamental and applied research cross-fertilize.
• You have a creative and critical attitude, combined with perseverance, pro-activity and being flexible and stress-resistant.
• You are fluent in English language skills, both in speaking and writing.
