About the Project

PhD position (m/f/d) in homogeneous magnetic immunoassays (full time, limited for 3 years - to the next possible date)

We are looking for a PhD student to work on the interdisciplinary DFG (German Science Foundation) funded project on colloidal magnetic nanoparticles as biomarkers for rapid and mix-measure magnetic immunoassays using the Magnetic Particle Spectroscopy (MPS) technique. Magnetic, colloidal, and surface properties of magnetic biomarkers play crucial roles in the success and reproducibility of magnetic immunoassays. This PhD project aims to decouple these parameters in order to establish reproducible and robust assays. We will focus on metrological aspects of magnetic assays such as measurement protocol, data evaluation strategy, and uncertainty budget. The final objective of the project is to establish standard test procedures on biologically relevant samples for the detection of viruses and antibodies. The project is a collaborative research between the Institute for Electrical Measurement Science and Fundamental Electrical Engineering and the Institute of Biochemistry, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics, Department Biotechnology at Technische Universität Braunschweig, and Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research (HZI, Braunschweig). We are therefore looking for an ambitious candidate who is willing to conduct an inter-institutional research in a highly dynamic and flourishing science environment in Braunschweig.

Requirements:

·       Master degree in Physics, Biophysics or Materials Science

·       Hands-on experiences on biophysical characterization of hybrid nanomaterials

·       Experiences with colloidal synthesis of nanoparticles and magnetic measurements are plus

·       Willingness to work in both wet-lab and different characterization labs

·       Willingness to conduct an interdisciplinary experimental PhD project in a multidisciplinary setting

·       Willingness and high capacity to learn new procedures and analysis methods

·       High level of communication and responsibility in an international environment

·       Very good command of English language

·       Writing papers and presenting results in national and international conferences

What we offer:

We offer well-equipped laboratories for both wet-lab works, magnetic measurements, and other characterizations. The PhD candidate will be involved in a highly dynamic and well-grounded collaborative research environment.

The position is suitable for part-time, but should be filled 100 percent. Depending on the assignment of tasks and fulfillment of personal requirements, payment is up to EG 13 TV-L. Application costs cannot be reimbursed. Please understand that applications that are not considered can only be returned against a self-addressed envelope with sufficient postage. Personal data will be stored for the purposes of the application process.

Disabled persons will be given preference in the case of equal suitability. Proof must be enclosed. Applications from people of all nationalities are welcome. The TU Braunschweig strives to reduce underrepresentation in all areas and positions in the sense of the NGG. Therefore, applications from women are especially welcome.

If you have any questions regarding the job advertisement, please contact Dr. Aidin Lak.

Interested applicants should send their CV, motivation letter (one page), one page abstract on their master thesis work, and one letter of recommendation to Dr. Aidin Lak ([Email Address Removed]) until June 10th, 2022. We aim to fill in the position as soon as possible.
