Prof L Gardner  Applications accepted all year round  Competition Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

Supervisor: Professor Leroy Gardner

About the Post

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship in the area of structural engineering at Imperial College London. We are developing a new method of structural design by advanced analysis that replaces traditional hand calculations with more sophisticated numerical simulations, making design more accurate, more efficient and more sustainable. Research is needed to define the key input parameters and to assess the system level reliability and to apply the method in real-world case study settings.

The student will join the steel structures research group (www.imperial.ac.uk/steel-structures) of Professor Leroy Gardner in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, which is the largest and most highly rated civil engineering department in the UK. The student will benefit from world-class facilities, a world-leading and friendly research environment and industrial support.

Requirements

Applications will not be considered unless the following requirements are satisfied:

  • A First Class Degree (or International equivalent), in civil engineering or closely-related disciplines.
  • A Masters level degree qualification.
  • English language requirements (e.g. IELTS 6.5 overall, minimum 6.0 in all elements).

Furthermore, students who demonstrate the following desirable qualifications are encouraged to apply:

  • Well organized and ability to work independently.
  • Ability to learn new skills and build relationships with new people in an effective manner.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

About the Funding

The studentship will provide funding for up to 3.5 years, including tuition fees (3 years) and a tax-free stipend at the standard UKRI London rate, £19,668 for the 2022/23 academic year, for 3.5 years. Full funding is available to Home students. The funding can also be used to partly support an international student.

Other scholarships can be found on the university website:
