About the Project

The research group for vegetative optogenetics is seeking a highly motivated
PhD student (f/m/d)
3-year doctoral programme, part-time 65 % | salary according to TV-L

The University Medicine Center Göttingen is a tertiary care center and offers great development potential. Its 7,900 employees work in over 65 departments and facilities to provide top-quality patient care, excellent research and modern teaching. Göttingen, “City of Science“, located near the center of Germany, the University Medical Center Göttingen is embedded in the city′s attractive network of scientific research facilities.

The PhD student will be associated to the International Research Training Group 1816 (http://www.grk1816.med.uni-goettingen.de/) and will enter the PhD Program Molecular Medicine within the Georg August University School of Sciences (GAUSS).

Our research group is located in the Institute for Cardiovascular Physiology and is focusing on the development of new optogenetic approaches, their application to improve our understanding in (patho-)physiology of the heart and muscle tissue as well as to develop translational strategies to improve current treatment strategies in clinics. In her/his project, the PhD candidate will work on the translation of optogenetic laryngeal pacemaking (Bruegmann, Nat. Comm. 2015). In collaboration with the ENT departement and the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK, University of Freiburg), we will explore the feasibility of optogenetic stimulation of intralaryngeal muscles in pigs and develop fully implantable devices for illumination. One important focus of the PhD project is to characterize the reaction of the immune system to the gene transfer and expression of optogenetic proteins. The successful candidate will be trained in optogenetics, gene transfer techniques, electrophysiology, skeletal muscle physiology and immunology.

Your application should include a full curriculum vitae, a statement addressing your motivation and ability to work within a close network of different research groups and provide the names and contact details of at least two referees.

Women are especially encouraged to apply. Applicants with disabilities and equal qualifications will be given preferential treatment.

We look forward to receiving your application by December 15th, 2019:
