PhD scholarship in Consumer and Sensory Science Fully Funded Māori PhD Scholarship

School of Food and Advanced Technology

About the Project

We are inviting applicants for a fully funded three year PhD scholarship in Consumer and Sensory Science based at Massey University focusing on Consumer engagement with emerging and established alternative protein foods and ingredients. An important component of the research will be to integrate Māori product concepts and storytelling into consumer research investigations to inform viable product development options for Māori food and beverage entities, including growers.

The exciting three year scholarship provides a tax-free stipend of NZ$30,000 per annum and covers all tuition fees and research costs. It offers the opportunity for a Māori scholar to gain a PhD working within an internationally recognised research team in Aotearoa and with collaborators in Singapore. The scholarship is based in the Food Experience and Sensory Testing (Feast) Laboratory at Massey University in Palmerston North and is fully funded by our MBIE Future Foods catalyst research grant: Te Rangahau Taha Wheako mō ngā Kai o Āpōpō. The successful applicant will be supervised by renowned sensory and consumer scientist Professor Joanne Hort (Feast) and independent nutrition scientist and leader in Vision Mātauranga, Dr Meika Foster (Edible Research Ltd).

Details of the project

The focus of the PhD is to investigate the factors, including sensory appeal, that drive consumer engagement with alternative proteins, in particular those being grown and/or developed by Māori food and beverage entities. It aims to explore consumer awareness in New Zealand and overseas of the unique value proposition that Māori food producers bring to the alternative proteins category. The student will develop capability in sensory and consumer science whilst gaining insights into the agrifood industry from working alongside and being guided by the aspirations of our Māori business research partners. The work will support the project’s generation of unique insights to inform land-use decisions of relevance to Māori F&B businesses and landowners.

Candidates must be Māori and live in New Zealand

They should have a minimum of an Honours degree with First or Second Class Honours (Division 1) in Food Science, Nutrition, Psychology, Science or any related discipline and excellent interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
