Dr Adrián Gómez Suárez, Prof Nils Schebb  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

The current vacancy is part of the food chemistry group (http://www.schebb-web.de/). The group of Prof. Dr. Schebb investigates the effects of the diet on human physiology by means of chromatography/mass spectrometry (MS). The ongoing research is well documented in about 100 publications which can be found at research gate (https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Nils_Schebb/publications).

The PhD project aims to develop and apply liquid chromatography (LC) and gas chromatography (GC) methods coupled to MS for the quantification of oxylipins and other lipids. Both targeted as well as non-targeted metabolomics is applied to evaluate the effects of food ingredients.

A focus is set on the investigation of the biological role and fate of oxylipins. In the project biological samples from humans and animals are analyzed AND in vitro as well as cell culture assays are employed as model systems.

The applicant should have a strong background in analytical chemistry / biochemistry. Candidates with prior experience in GC-MS; LC-MS and or activity testing in cell culture have a strong advantage. A background in (organic) chemistry, biochemistry, physiology/toxicology will be accounted as well.

Good communication skills, both verbal and written in English and a Masters Degree (or equivalent) obtained within the EU are a prerequisite. The candidate should be enthusiastic about research, interested in learning new skills and disciplines (such as biomedical questions), accept responsibility and enjoy working independently as well as in collaboration with other scientists.

Research environment

The researcher will be embedded into the research group of Prof. Dr. Nils Helge Schebb at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. The group and the project are funded by grants of German Research Foundation (DFG) and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The research is based on close collaborations within the University of Wuppertal as well as different medical schools in Germany.

Please address your application with the usual documents including a cover letter (demonstrating your experience/interests in the project and the group), curriculum vitae, your most recent certificates and a one-page description of your previous scientific work.
