Mrs Kerstin Schweigert  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (Students Worldwide)

About the Project

The Cryo and Stress Biology Research Group is part of the Federal Ex situ GeneBank for agricultural and horticultural crops and is responsible for the medium and long-term storage of vegetatively preserved plants. Cryopreservation of potatoes is one of the main tasks of the group. With 1,900 potato accessions stored under ultra-low-temperature conditions (-196°C), the group conserves one of the world's largest collections in cryo.

The potato shoot tip viability after cryopreservation is affected by a number of stresses including mechanical wounding, cold, dehydration and the plant microbiome. The aim of the DFG funded project ‘PotEND’ (Potato - endophyte interaction in response to complex abiotic stress) is to study plant-microorganism interactions and the influence of endophytic microorganisms on the potato plant metabolism, growth and regeneration potential.

Your tasks:

  • In co-operation with our partners from the Austrian Institute of Technology GmbH (AIT), you will work on potato in vitro plants in a tissue culture environment.
  • You will study the in vitro plant microbiome and transcriptome.
  • You will conduct hormone analysis, FISH and cryopreservation.

Your qualifications and skills:

  • You have a university degree (Master, Diploma) in biology, agricultural or related plant sciences.
  • You have skills in the areas of plant molecular biology.
  • You bring practical experience in laboratory work, knowledge of statistical analysis (e.g. by using R), programming and enhanced English skills.
  • You like to present your research findings to the best of your ability at scientific conferences and journals.
  • You had the chance to gain some knowledge about plant tissue culture, cryobiology or FISH.

You fit to us:

  • … if you are curious and open-minded.
  • … if you can work independently and strategically.
  • ... if you are interested in working on the plant microbiome in a German-Austrian team.
  • …if you are excited about a short-term stay in Tulln, Austria.

We offer you:

  • … a highly motivated team with excellent scientific and technical infrastructure.
  • … an inspiring IPK and AIT research environment and the opportunity to attend conferences and to develop personal strength through IPK Graduate School.
  • … an exciting 3-year PhD position starting by 01.10.2022.
  • … a gross salary up to 65% E13 TV-L.

The IPK is striving to increase the proportion of women in sectors where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages qualified women to apply. As an institution which has been awarded the Certificate for Career and Family (“berufundfamilie”), we offer family-friendly working conditions and flexible working hours. The IPK has set a goal to employ more people with disabilities. Qualified applicants with a disability will be given preference.

Your application:

We are looking forward to receive your complete online application (letter of motivation, CV, certificates) as one single pdf-document until 12.08.2022 (https://www.ipk-gatersleben.de/en/career/job-offers). If you have questions or require more information, please do contact Kerstin Schweigert ([Email Address Removed]). Please indicate the reference number 42/07/22 in your correspondence.
