As German Research Center for Environmental Health, Helmholtz Zentrum München pursues the goal of developing personalized medical approaches for the prevention and therapy of major common diseases such as diabetes mellitus, allergies and lung diseases. To achieve this, it investigates the interaction of genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle.

The newly founded Helmholtz Institute for Metabolic, Obesity and Vascular Research (HI-MAG) at the University of Leipzig is part of the Helmholtz Zentrum München and aims to uncover the molecular underpinnings of metabolic, obesity and vascular disorders to enable precision therapies. The Young Investigator group “Vascular Epigenetics” at HI-MAG in Leipzig is now recruiting a PhD student in Metabolism and Vascular Function (f/m/d) 2019/0435
Your MissionThe Vascular Epigenetics group, headed by Dr. Bilal Sheikh, elucidates the molecular mechanisms that underpin the complex
interplay between metabolic, lifestyle and epigenetic factors. The group focuses on these themes in the context of vascular function and vascular disease. In close partnership with the Medical Faculty of the University of Leipzig and the University Hospital Leipzig, we aim to translate our discoveries into effective therapies against vascular dysfunction in a variety of pathologies.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work on one or more exciting projects that investigate the relationship between metabolism and vascular function. The projects will involve dissecting molecular mechanisms and phenotypic changes in animal models using state-of-the-art techniques such as single cell technologies, next-generation sequencing, chromatin analyses and mass spectrometry based metabolomics. In addition, clinical human samples will be available for translational research.
Your QualificationsThe ideal applicant should be highly motivated, have good communication skills and be a quick learner. Exceptional grades in Master’s and Bachelor’s programs as well as fluent written and spoken English are mandatory.

Remuneration and benefits are in accordance with the collective agreement for the public service (EG 13 50% TV EntgO Bund). In addition, there is also the possibility of granting an allowance amounting to 15% if the necessary conditions are fulfilled.

The position is (initially) limited to three years.

The activity involves special knowledge and experience specific to own scientific skills.
