Our research group is located in the Institute for Cardiovascular Physiology and is focusing on the development of new optogenetic approaches, their application to improve our understanding in (patho-)physiology of the heart and muscle tissue as well as to develop translational strategies to improve current treatment strategies in clinics.

In her / his project, the PhD candidate will work on the translation of optogenetic laryngeal pacemaking (Bruegmannn, Nat. Comm. 2015). In collaboration with the ENT department, and the Department of Microsystems Engineering (IMTEK, University of Freiburg), we will explore the feasibility of optogenetic stimulation of intralaryngeal muscles in pigs and develop fully implantable devices for illumination. One important focus of the PhD project is to characterize the reaction of the immune system to the gene transfer and expression of optogenetic proteins.

The successful candidate will be trained in optogenetics, gene transfer techniques, electrophysiology, skeletal muscle physiology and immunology.
