PhD studentship: Addressing the visitor experience in relation to museums which focus on war and other forms of conflict

We welcome applications for a full-time University studentship to support and work in our Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies alongside the Memory, History & Identity and Conflict, Security and International Order research clusters.


Background

In 2013, the EU Directorate General for Internal Policies stressed the need for the development of a critical ‘culture of remembrance’ and emphasised the ‘vital role of education as a tool to create an informed historical consciousness’.

The successful candidate’s work will be situated within the forthcoming EU-funded Horizon 2020 project, under the call ‘Heritage of War’, ‘Unsettling Remembering and Social Cohesion in Transnational Europe’ (UNREST). A major strand of this project is to analyse the role of war museums in making past conflicts meaningful for, and promoting critical reflection among, present-day audiences.

The successful student will conduct their research under the supervision of Dr Nina Parish and Dr David Clarke.


The project

The recipient of the studentship will be expected to formulate their own research project at the intersection of Museum Studies and Memory Studies with the guidance of the UNREST team. The theme of the project must address the visitor experience in relation to museums which focus on war and other forms of conflict. The key case study will be the Historial de la Grande Guerre in Péronne, France.

The successful applicant will be expected to develop their own original theoretical and methodological position, with reference to the wider ongoing work of the UNREST project.

In addition, the successful applicant will be required to support the delivery of the dissemination and impact activities of the UNREST project, in particular the development of Mass Open On-Line Course (MOOC) by members of the project team. The recipient of the studentship will also attend meetings, workshops and conferences of the UNREST consortium. The studentship is available for three years from April 2016.


Eligibility

The successful candidate should:
- fulfil the entrance requirements for a Department of Politics, Languages & International Studies PhD (http://www.bath.ac.uk/study/pg/programmes/poli-lang-and-inte-stud-mphi/)
- have a good first degree and a Masters degree in a relevant subject area
- have a high level of written and spoken English, as well as good competence in French language (applicants with other languages, in particular, Italian, are welcome and additional language training can be arranged in some circumstances).
