The Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering of Loughborough University is seeking a highly motivated graduate to undertake an exciting 3-year PhD project entitled “Advanced Diagnostics of Batteries for Electric Vehicles”. This project will involve working with leading academics in the rapidly growing field of electric vehicles, with the aim to develop innovative diagnostic methods and improve understanding of how batteries behave in vehicles.

Full Project Detail

The transport sector is currently undergoing a significant shift towards electrified powertrains in an effort to reduce carbon dioxide and particulate emissions and to meet government targets. The widespread adoption of electric vehicles brings many new engineering and economic challenges that need to be addressed; including improving energy density, reducing cost, extending battery lifetime and rapid recharging. This PhD project will investigate new methods of measuring battery state of charge (SOC) and state of health (SOH) in vehicle applications for improved operation and extended vehicle lifetime.

The work will focus on novel techniques that can be applied to vehicle applications to better understand the internal operational states of the batteries using external sensors. This will involve a combination of experimental methods, numerical and empirical models as well as the opportunity to utilise machine learning methods. It is intended that the project will have a real-world impact with the opportunity to deploy the developed methods to battery packs and work alongside automotive manufacturers. There will also be an emphasis on skills development, publishing research in top international journals and attending conferences.

Entry requirements

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in science or engineering. A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in automotive, chemical, electrical or materials engineering will be an advantage.

Funding Notes

The studentship is for three years and is intended to start in April or July 2019. It provides a tax-free stipend of £14,777 per annum plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. International (non-EU) students are welcome to apply, however the studentship will only cover the
international tuition fee and no stipend will be available. You would therefore need to provide your own living costs.
