About the Project

An opportunity exists for a driven and passionate student to undertake a Phd under the supervision of Prof. David Keays and Dr Madeline Lancaster on avian stem cells and cerebral organoids. This joint project will exploit the Keays lab's expertise in Avian biology and the Lancaster Lab's experience in self organising neural tissue. The project will aim to generate a library of avian iPSCs and ES cells for the generation of three dimensional neuronal cultures. The latter will then be employed to interrogate Avian specific aspects of neurodevelopment and sensory biology exploiting CRISP-Cas9 genome editing, single cell sequencing, and histological methods.

The ideal candidate

This ambitious project requires a candidate with an existing interest in stem cell biology and/or developmental neuroscience. They should be patient, be impervious to scientific failure, value quantitative approaches and have a strong academic record. Prior experience in cell culture methods and molecular biology will be advantageous. The student will be based in the Physiology, Development and Neuroscience department (PDN) in Cambridge, but should be prepared to spend time at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology (LMB) in Cambridge and at LMU in Munich. We actively encourage applications from prospective postgraduate students from underrepresented groups. The position is funded for three years and will cover home fees, as well as costs associated with travel, training and consumables.
