Overview

This is an opportunity to undertake research with a dynamic and well-supported multidisciplinary team to address a critical unmet need of colorectal cancer patients.

Surveys published in last 5 years show that colorectal cancer patients are not receiving the NICE-recommended level of dietetic guidance for living with and beyond cancer. This represents a considerable challenge to address due to low levels of dietitian time available and general under-resourcing. One possible approach to improve care would be to deliver support via an app. Increased adoption of mobile tech across age groups, improved understanding of drivers of engagement with users and acceptability with HCPs, suggest this approach may be viable. eNutri is one such app, with particular features making it potentially adaptable for this application, notably in its personalisation of feedback to the individual’s existing diet and lifestyle preferences.

The programme of research will involve literature synthesis to distil and deliver the best, evidence-based guidance, coupled to small scale trials of the app to determine efficacy. These will be complemented with user acceptability assessments with both cancer survivors and dietitians.

Skills learned will include systematic reviewing, critical synthesis, ethics and delivery of trial, quantitative data analysis, qualitative methods.
