About the Project

Applications are invited for a research studentship in the field of Sustainable Lubrication leading to the award of a PhD degree, starting Jan 2023 - October 2023. The post is supported by a bursary and fees (at the UK student rate) provided by Imperial College London. International students will be considered.

Sustainability of human activities is at the heart of our combat to climate change. Improving energy efficiency and durability of machines can contribute significantly in reducing our carbon footprint and effective, smart lubrication is at the heart of this effort!

This project is experimental and focuses on how sustainable lubrication can be achieve via sustainable lubricant formulations and active control of the lubrication environment. We aim to promote the use of green lubricant and minimise waste production. The project will involve both fundamental and applied studies. The researcher will design experiments that allow various lubricant properties to be measured in situ and in real time during rubbing. Experiments will be conducted in various environment and under the influence of external fields to investigate how the life and performance of lubricants can be enhanced by external factors. The project will involve various techniques, include advanced laser spectroscopies, and surface and chemical characterisation techniques.

The PhD researcher will be a part of the Tribology Group at Imperial College London. It offers a vibrant, multidisciplinary and multicultural working environment. Laboratories were recently refurbished and are well equipped with an extensive range of instrumentation and extensive computer facilities.

You will be an enthusiastic and self-motivated person who meets the academic requirements for enrolment for the PhD degree at Imperial College London. You will hold, or be expected to achieve, a Master’s degree or a 4-year undergraduate degree at 2:1 level (or above) in a relevant subject, e.g. Chemical or Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Chemistry, Physics or a related field. Experience in designing and building test rigs is highly desirable. You will have an enquiring, rigorous and hands-on approach to research, together with a strong intellect and disciplined work habits. An interest in experimental work and development is essential, as are good team-working, observational and communication skills.
