Applications are invited for a fully-funded PhD Studentship starting in October 2020 to undertake research in the area of Computer Vision and Machine Learning. The studentship will include research in the Multimedia & Vision Group (MMV) at Queen Mary University of London, a leading research group which publishes in top journals and conferences in the field of Computer Vision and Multimedia Analysis.
This PhD is in the area of unsupervised learning for human facial behaviour. Analysing human emotions with supervised learning has been the focus of extensive research over the past years, and significant achievements have been reported thanks to the advent of Deep Learning. However, such methods require a large amount of labelled data, for example annotating video at a frame level, which is both tedious to obtain and expensive. Therefore, this PhD will approach this problem from the perspective of unsupervised learning. You will study and develop novel methodologies for unsupervised learning and then apply them for analysing human facial behaviour.
The student will be based in the School of Electronic Engineering and Computer Science (www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk) at Queen Mary University of London, and will be a member of the MMV research group (http://networks.eecs.qmul.ac.uk). Enquiries can be made by email to Dr. Georgios Tzimiropoulos ([email protected]).
Please note we request a ‘Statement of Research Interests’. Your statement should answer three questions: (i) Why are you interested in the topic? (ii) What relevant experience do you have? and (iii) a research proposal. Your statement should be brief: no more than 750 words or one side of A4 paper. In addition, we would also like you to send a sample of your written work. This might be a chapter of your final year dissertation, or a published conference or journal paper. More details can be found at: http://www.eecs.qmul.ac.uk/phd/apply.php
The closing date for the applications is 15 May 2020. Interviews are expected to take place in May/June 2020.
This studentship is available to UK and EU students. It is fully funded for 3 years, it will cover student fees and a tax-free stipend starting at £17,285 per annum.
