Overview
This project will investigate the cosmic large-scale structure, the skeleton of matter in the Universe. Galaxies trace this large-scale skeleton of dark matter and form in large gravitationally bound dark matter structures. Major upcoming galaxy surveys will track the growth of structure across large volumes and provide a cosmic laboratory for testing fundamental physics. To extract the maximum amount of information from surveys, we need accurate models for the dynamics of dark matter, and powerful statistics to characterise galaxy clustering.

This PhD project will tackle these two challenges. First, we will use the quantum-classical correspondence to model gravitational dynamics. The goal is to develop analytical and computational tools, and hunt for signatures of dark matter. Second, we will develop clustering statistics for the non-Gaussian matter distribution. By using a sweet spot of statistics that can be easily measured and accurately predicted, we will improve the standard analysis to obtain insights into fundamental physics.

The successful applicant will join the Cosmology Research Group in the School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics (https://bit.ly/3604mgW). In the REF2014 exercise, the School was ranked 11th place in the UK by GPA and 10th on publications, placing us in the top quartile for

Mathematical Sciences. Regular seminars, training modules, and a visitor programme provide a stimulating research atmosphere. The School is committed to promoting diversity, and we particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups. The studentship includes the provision of a desktop computer and travel allowance. Students have the opportunity to take part in a range of paid teaching activities, with training provided.

Eligibility Criteria
You must have or expect to obtain a first class or 2:1 honours degree in mathematics, physics, or a closely related discipline. Enthusiasm for research, an ability to think and work independently, excellent analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication skills are essential requirements.

This award is available to UK/EU and international candidates. If English is not your first language, you must have IELTS 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 5.5 in all sub-skills).
