A PhD studentship is available with 3 years stipend funding at the UCL Division of Surgery and Interventional Science under the supervision of Dr John Counsell and Dr Gavin Jell.
Studentship Description
Our research group specialises in the development of new technologies for gene and cell therapy, with specific emphasis on engineering virus-like particles (VLPs) for delivery of RNA into target cells. During this PhD studentship, the student will engineer novel VLPs designed to treat diseases requiring liver surgery, such as viral hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The student will investigate new technologies engineered with features that harness the immune system for targeted killing of cancer cells or virally infected cells. Techniques will include molecular engineering of viral constructs, analysis of vector potency, development of ex vivo organoid cultures and in vivo investigation of therapeutic efficacy.
Person Specification
Essential:
- BSc (or equivalent) in biological/medical sciences.
- Prior knowledge of gene therapy technologies or molecular virology.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Effective spoken and written English.
- Willingness to learn and adapt to new techniques.
Desirable:
- MSc in a relevant subject area.
- Practical experience with gene therapy technologies and molecular virology.
- Experienced in analysing and writing up data into research reports.
- Experienced in presenting complex information effectively to a range of audiences.
- Evidence of a long-term focus towards developing a research career in academia and/or industry.
