PhD Studentship in Nano-electronics: Deep cryogenic CMOS device characterisation and modelling for integrated quantum computing

About the Project

Applications are invited for a PhD in the School of Engineering, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU).

This fully funded three-year PhD Scholarship would comprise the waiving of annual tuition fees, a maintenance stipend of £ 16,062 per annum, plus a contribution towards research running costs of £1,600 per annum. 

Eligibility: We will accept applications from both UK and non-UK citizens, and we will also accept applications for part-time, fees-only studentships. 

Qualification: Applicants should hold (or expect to get ) a good Master’s degree and/or a good (first-class or upper second class) Honours undergraduate degree.

Location: LJMU (Liverpool, UK) and IMEC (Leuven, Belgium)

Duration: full-time, three years.

This PhD project will be in collaboration with the world-leading nanoelectronics research institute, IMEC in Belgium, whose partners include top companies such as Intel, Micron, Samsung, and TSMC. The student will have chances to work at IMEC together with scientists from the above-mentioned organisations, providing excellent opportunities for career development.

The research will focus on characterizing and modelling advanced CMOS devices operating at deep cryogenic temperatures for the integrated quantum computing controllers. Quantum computer (QC) is a new compute paradigm that has demonstrated unprecedented speed in solving difficult problems such as prime factorization, complex synthesis, and optimizations. A QC consists of a quantum processor that has a set of quantum bits (qubits), and most solid-state quantum logic qubits operate at deep-cryogenic temperature of about 10 mK, including superconducting, spin and charge based qubits. Quantum processors in most existing QCs are controlled and monitored by a classical controller that operates at room temperature. System-on-chip by integrating the controller at proximity of the QC processor at sub-4K or eventually on the same chip will drastically enhance the performance and will enable the large-scale integrated quantum computer for the forthcoming era of quantum computing supremacy.

Professor Weidong Zhang and his group at LJMU have extensive research expertise into the use and characterisation of various nanoelectronics devices, through close collaboration with IMEC in the past 15 years. The Microelectronics Research Group at LJMU has well established research record and advanced research facilities. We are seeking candidates with strong background and interest in one of the following subjects, electrical and electronic engineering, VLSI, microelectronics, nanoelectronics, semiconductor, CMOS reliability, physics, or material engineering. The calibre of candidates will be reviewed based on their academic qualifications and their academic/research.

3) Completed IELTS or equivalent with a minimum of 5.5 in each component and a minimum of 6.5 overall or an English speaking degree, both less than 2 years old for international applicants.
