Project Description

Applications are invited for a postgraduate student to join a new research project in the Quantum nanoPhotonics (QnP) group at the University of Southampton. The aim of this project is to design and fabricate integrated systems based on quantum light. Research in the group aims to explore fundamental physics and develop new components for quantum technologies, including the generation of quantum light from non-linear interaction, solid state quantum emitters coupled to optical cavities and spin-based systems. We use the developed non-classical states to understand the foundation of quantum physics and for quantum computing, simulations and sensing. The laboratory is equipped with state of the art equipment and has access to world-leading facilities of the Southampton Nanofabrication Centre (

The Quantum nanoPhotonics group is a young group and offers a dynamic, stimulating and friendly research environment, with the possibility to work with national and international collaborators across Europe and worldwide.

A fully funded PhD place on this project is available for UK and EU applicants. The successful candidate will be trained on different aspects, from photonic simulations to nano-fabrications and quantum information theory and experiments. By the end of the PhD studies, thanks to the dedicated level of mentoring offered by the QnP group, the candidate will have acquired a fully comprehensive set of skills, including communications and management, to establish her/himself as a competent, independent and competitive researcher in the field.

The project involves experimental research using state of the art facilities and equipment, combining fundamental questions with potential new applications. The candidate has (or expect) a Master degree in Physics, Electronic Engineering or related discipline with an excellent academic record in semiconductor physics or optics. Knowledge of quantum optics, quantum information, spectroscopy or low temperature physics is desirable. The candidate is expected to have a strong attitude towards experimental physics and good communications and management skills.

Funding Notes

Entry requirements: first or upper second-class degree or equivalent.

Closing date: Consideration of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled.

Duration: 3.5 years (full-time).

Funding: full tuition fees for UK students, and a tax-free stipend of £14,777 per year
