One fully funded PhD position to work with Dr. Tariq Elahi in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, in the area of Security and Privacy of Distributed Systems, Networks, and the Internet of Things.
The aims of this research is to enable robust designs and uptake of Privacy Enhancing Technologies (PETS) in the real world. The approach will be to establish data-driven design of the security and privacy of systems, networks and their real-world deployments, both for the Internet and IoT settings.
Developing and leveraging a security and privacy tailored data-driven security framework will lead to heretofore unexplored data about hidden trends, trade-offs, and system relationships. The research will be engaged with the development of security and privacy-sensitive feedback loops to enable these data-driven insights that will further strengthen systems and enhance their security and privacy posture in their real-world use cases.
• Project-specific skills: prior work in, or awareness of, the technical areas of security and/or privacy such as secure protocol design and evaluation, systems/organization design, embedded systems, control theory, probability theory, and/or empirical evaluation.
• Programming skills: Intermediate proficiency in C/C++, Python, Java, R, Shell Script, and/or similar languages.
• Prior peer-reviewed publications are highly desirable.
• Knowledge of statistical tools and their application is highly desirable.
• Proficiency in English (both oral and written)
• A good Bachelors degree (2.1 or above or international equivalent) or Masters degree in a relevant subject (physics, mathematics, engineering, computer science, or related subject)

Studentship and eligibility
The studentship starting in 2019/20 covers:
• Full time PhD tuition fees for a student with UK/EU nationality (£4,327 per annum, subject to annual increment).
• A tax free stipend of GBP £15,009 per year for 3.5 years.
• Additional programme costs of £1000 per year.
