About the Project

PhD position in Theoretical Attosecond Science at University College London

A PhD position for 3.5 years is available in the group of Professor Agapi Emmanouilidou starting October 2023 or earlier. The position can be on either of the following two fields depending on the applicant’s research interests and expertise. The studentship is available for UK/European applicants.

A)  A PhD position is available in the research area of Theoretical Strong-Field and Attosecond Science. The goal of this project is to investigate ultrafast phenomena that take place during the nonlinear response of molecules and atoms when driven by intense laser fields. Such processes are the formation of highly excited Rydberg states as well as correlated electron dynamics during non-sequential multi-electron ionization. We will explore the above processes when three or four electrons ionize reaching beyond the current state-of-the-art in Attoscience. We have recently developed a state-of-the art model that allows us to study in three-dimensions triple and more than three electron ionization in strongly-driven systems. This project will involve the theoretical formulation and computational implementation of state-of-the-art semi-classical techniques. Moreover, part of these studies will be performed in collaboration with world-leading experimental groups in Attoscience as well as with world leading theorists. More information regarding the work that is performed in the group of Professor A. Emmanouilidou can be found on her webpage at https://lnkd.in/dP8xcge8

Application procedure: Please send a CV and transcript, in the first instance, and address all your inquiries to Professor Agapi Emmanouilidou [Email Address Removed]

 B)  A Ph.D position is available in the research area of interaction of matter with Free-Electron Lasers or VUV and XUV laser pulses, i.e. by large photon energy laser pulses. The fascinating aspect of such lasers interacting with atoms and molecules is that they boil away the electrons from the inside out.

The goal of the PhD project is to develop state-of-the-art quantum mechanical techniques and computational tools to address and compute the interplay between photo-ionization and Auger processes, address coherent control and coherent ionization processes in atoms and molecules driven by VUV and XUV laser pulses, as well as to study the interplay of electron and nuclear motion during the break up of molecules driven by VUV and XUV pulses. Moreover, part of these studies will be performed in close collaboration with leading experimental groups in ultrafast science.
