Dr Aidan McDonald  No more applications being accepted  Funded PhD Project (European/UK Students Only)

About the Project

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. studentship in the Bioinspired Inorganic Chemistry group led by Dr. Aidan McDonald based in the School of Chemistry at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin (http://chemistry.tcd.ie/staff/people/mcdonald/).

Requirements: Applicants should have an honours Bachelors or Masters degree in chemistry (I or high II.1 grade or equivalent) and have a keen interest in the synthesis and characterisation of transition metal complexes. Applicants should be highly motivated and have research experience in synthetic inorganic chemistry. Applications should be submitted before January 8th 2023. The anticipated start date is March 2023.

Details: The research project will focus on the activation of saturated hydrocarbon substrates using first-row transition metal complexes. It will involve the preparation and characterisation of highly reactive high-valent metal-halide oxidants and an exploration of their reactivity towards substrates with the strongest of C–H bonds (see publications at link for further insight). The researcher will develop a variety of skills during their studies: a set of synthetic practices for handling air, moisture, and temperature sensitive compounds; and an array of spectroscopic characterisation techniques (UV-vis, NMR, EPR, XRD, XAS, FT-IR, Raman). The student will automatically be enrolled in the Dublin Chemistry Graduate Programme and will be required to act as a demonstrator in undergraduate laboratories within the School of Chemistry as part of their duties. The Ph.D. studentship is fully funded (E.U. academic fees and stipend) for four years, subject to satisfactory progress. The stipend will be €18,500 per annum.

Applications from female candidates and those from under-represented backgrounds are strongly encouraged. Trinity College Dublin is committed to the continued development of policies, procedures and practices which do not discriminate on grounds such as gender, civil status, family status, ethnicity, age, disability, sexual orientation, religion or membership of the Travelling community.
