Overview
Material localisation and light-matter interactions
What really are light and matter at the most fundamental level? At the heart of the quantum revolution lies the often mysterious electromagnetic interaction between atoms and photons. Experiments are now reaching unprecedented light-matter interaction strengths whereby matter becomes significantly dressed by a virtual photonic cloud delocalised in space and time.
The aim of this project is to extend a powerful generalised approach to nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics in order to study the balance between the dressing and localisation of matter, and to determine how this affects which properties of light and matter are measurable.
The project involves
- Developing and applying methods of theoretical quantum electrodynamics, quantum optics, and open quantum systems theory
- Applying numerical methods where necessary
- Preparing manuscripts for publication
- Engaging with national and international researchers and collaborators, for example, delivering talks and attending relevant conferences
- Career development and participation in appropriate training courses

Eligibility Criteria
You must have, or expect to gain, a minimum 2:1 Honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant subject such as Physics, Mathematics, or another strongly quantitative discipline. Enthusiasm for research, the ability to think and work independently, excellent analytical skills and strong verbal and written communication skills are also essential requirements.
Home and international applicants (inc. EU) are welcome to apply. In the first instance the studentship covers only home tuition fees. The School of Mathematics, Statistics and Physics has very limited additional funding to offer full studentships including international fees to exceptional international applicants. Applicants whose first language is not English require an IELTS score of 6.5 overall with a minimum of 5.5 in each subsection. International applicants may require an ATAS (Academic Technology Approval Scheme) clearance certificate prior to obtaining their visa and to study on this programme.
How To Apply
To apply for a studentship, you must register and apply through the University’s Apply to Newcastle Portal
Once registered select ‘Create a Postgraduate Application’.
Use ‘Course Search’ to identify your programme of study:
- search for the ‘Course Title’ using the programme code: 8821F
- Research Area: Physics
- select ‘PhD Physics (full time) - Theoretical' as the programme of study
You will then need to provide the following information in the ‘Further Questions’ section:
- a ‘Personal Statement’ (this is a mandatory field) - upload a document or write a statement directly in to the application form
- the studentship code MSP057
- when prompted for how you are providing your research proposal - select ‘Write Proposal’. You should then type in the title of the research project from this advert. You do not need to upload a research proposal.
In addition, before you submit your application you will need to upload the following supporting documentation:
- covering letter and CV. The covering letter must state the title of the studentship, quote reference code MSP057 and state how your interests and experience relate to the project
- degree transcripts and certificates and, if English is not your first language, a copy of your English language qualification if already completed.
You will not be able to submit your application until you have submitted all required documents/information.
