Full Project Detail
Gambling is considered a significant public health issue for the United Kingdom. One key channel through which gambling is advertised, promoted and even celebrated is football. Moreover, football has long been one of the most popular games to bet on in Britain. This culturally normalised activity, combined with the liberalisation of gambling advertising and the development of technologies has been increasingly ‘gamblised’ the sport of football, changing the way football is consumed, while also bringing about negative social consequences, notably, problem gambling.

The aim of this project is to explore football fans’ engagement with betting and its impact on their football supporting and spectating practices. Located at the intersection of gambling and consumption studies, the project will produce original academic outputs in various fields of study, and create a real-world impact by informing future policies with respect to gambling sponsorship, advertising, fan experience and customer protection, etc.
