Pipelines are the veins of modern economy. They are present in every facility around the globe and are used in all industrial sectors. While pipelines are an efficient and relatively safe means of transport, they carry substances that can damage the environment, destroy properties and even harm human lives.
In fact, many catastrophic corrosion failures in pipelines have been reported. In order to reduce the occurrence and impact of such unfortunate events, many Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and NDT tools have been developed and commercialized. Yet, these tools provide little feedback about the damage form and only reflect material loss information.
The objective of the present project is to enhance the CorrSense product and extend its capabilities to identify the effect of different corrosion mechanisms (general, pitting…) on the magnetic properties of pipe walls. Theoretical, experimental and numerical research will be required. Our purpose is to correlate the magnetic properties of the damaged pipe to the corrosion mechanism and ultimately, identify and predict the specific damage progress in affected pipeline areas.

Project Outline
The knowledge gained from this project will lead to the integration of the CorrSense product with IntegriWise: TWI’s Fitness-For-Service tool in order to achieve a complete set of Integrity management technology that enhances CorrSense offering scope. Visualisation based on virtual reality could be considered for the current development. Fullagar’s CorrSense system will be used in this research program and will be modified and upgraded to reflect any findings from this project.

About University/Department
Fullagar Technologies is a joint venture between TWI and Register that was launched in 2018. NSIRC is a state-of-the-art postgraduate engineering facility established and managed by structural integrity specialist TWI, working closely with lead academic partner Brunel University, the universities of Cambridge, Manchester, Loughborough, Birmingham, Leicester and a number of leading industrial partners. NSIRC aims to deliver cutting edge research and highly qualified personnel to its key industrial partners. 

Candidate Requirements
Candidates should have a relevant degree at 2.1 minimum, or an equivalent overseas degree in physics, electronics, software, materials or mechanical engineering. (magnetic principles, sensors, electronics, Python/C++ programming and software structure management, background knowledge of FFS desired) Overseas applicants should also submit IELTS results (minimum 6.5) if applicable.

Funding Notes

This project is funded by Lloyds Foundation and University. The studentship will provide successful Home/EU students with a minimum stipend of £16k/year and will cover the cost of tuition fees. Overseas applicants are welcome to apply, with total funding capped at £24k per year.
