About the Project

A fully-funded PhD opportunity at home student tuition fee rate and UKRI stipend level is available for a project to be jointly supervised by Siemens and the University of Birmingham, based at the University.

The PhD project topic is to create a prototype indoor radio propagation planning tool, validate and use it to undertake a systematic investigation of the variation in connectivity between 5G IoT devices due to indoor environment changes arising from the movement of furniture, people, etc. The project will quantify the IoT wireless network connectivity robustness to changes in the indoor environment and make recommendations both on improving robustness as well as on creating more sophisticated planning tools.

A successful applicant is expected to have a first class honours degree at Batchelors level or an upper second class honours (or Merit) degree at Masters level in a relevant subject (e.g. Electronic and Electrical Engineering, or Physics) with a demonstrable aptitude in mathematics and scientific programming, as well as good English language skills.

Guidance on using the University of Birmingham application process and portal can be found at: https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/postgraduate/courses/apply-pg/index.aspx The application portal is given in the application link below. A final decision on the successful applicant will not be made until a 2-4 weeks after the application deadline.
