Project Description

Applications are invited for a fully funded PhD studentship within the Experimental Nuclear Physics Group at the University of Surrey (

The funding is for a three-year research programme leading to the degree of Ph.D. The project will focus on key investigations relevant to both nuclear astrophysics and nuclear structure physics. The experimental work will take place mainly at leading international radioactive ion beam accelerator facilities including TRIUMF (Vancouver), CERN and Michigan State University and will utilise a variety of state-of-the-art detector systems for for both charged-particle and gamma-ray spectroscopy.

The project will commence on the 7th October 2019.

Entry requirements:
A first Class or Upper Second Honours degree (or equivalent overseas qualification) in an appropriate discipline (e.g., physics or mathematics and physics). You should be able to demonstrate excellent mathematical, analytic, programming skills. Some previous experience with radiation detector systems, experience with C/C++ programming and in performing Monte-Carlo simulations would be advantageous but is not essential.
If English is not your first language, you will be required to have an IELTS Academic of 6.5 or above (or equivalent), with no sub-test score below 6.

How to apply:
Apply through the University of Surrey admission system (, interviews will take place shortly after applications close on the 14th of April 2019.
Please state the project title and supervisor clearly on all applications.

Funding Notes

This is a research council funded studentship. The studentship covers the University tuition fees (at EU/UK level) and provides an annual tax free stipend for UK students (rate for 2019-2020 is £14,777 p.a. tax-free).
