PhD Studentship Opportunity in Understanding the Molecular Mechanisms that Drives Castration Resistant Prostate Cancer

Project Description

Prostate cancer (PrCa) is a leading cause of cancer related male mortality in the United Kingdom with over 11,000 deaths each year. The growth and progression of PrCa is regulated by androgens, which manifest their action by activating the androgen receptor (AR), a ligand activated transcription factor that in turn regulates the growth of PrCa. Since AR signaling is upregulated in PrCa, it is an attractive drug target in the treatment of the advanced PrCa. Hence, widely used androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is the mainstay treatment for PrCa, which is achieved by the use of anti-androgenic drugs such as Bicalutamide and Enzalutamide. ADT is initially effective but relapse is common leading to castration resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) for which there are no curative treatments.

The key question is why does ADT fail and how can we develop more effective anti-androgens to target the AR? This project will discover novel molecular mechanisms which can guide curative treatment for CRPC. Thus, the findings of this study will pave the way to effectively treat CRPC in order to alleviate the disease burden.

This a 3 year project, commencing on the 1st October 2019.

Entry requirements:
You must have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in a relevant area of Biological Sciences.
If English is not your first language, you must have IELTS 7 with at least 6.5 in all the components.
Highly motivated, self funded international students are encouraged to apply if they are able to obtain studentship funding from their own country.

How to apply:
Applications should be sent through the Bioscience and Medicine PhD course page: Please clearly state the studentship title on your application.

Funding Notes

All tuition fees for UK/EU students will be covered with a stipend of approximately £15,000 per annum. International students are accepted provided they can cover the difference of tuition fee between home and International students. Materials and consumables will be provided.
