With the increasing awareness of carbon emission impact, electric (green) vehicles are becoming more commonly used, and this brings new challenges in the operations planning. In this research we consider a problem faced by companies that deliver services to customer sites, e.g., maintenance of equipment, shopping delivery, installation of broadband. Such a company has a number of resources available (e.g., engineers, vans) and has a commitment to meet customer demand. We aim to investigate how to effectively use electronic vehicles in their operations to reduce the fuel costs and emissions. Routing electric vehicles is more challenging than the conventional vehicle routing problems (VRP as it needs to consider the battery life of the vehicle when scheduling tasks and to consider the location and time to charge the EV in addition to other constraints in VRP.

Raw data will be analysed using statistical and learning techniques to understand the relationship between variables, e.g., areas (domain, sub-domain, hub) causing the most pollution, congested zones and engineers that travel often in congested zones, and to identify the engineers who suit the limit of the travel time of the electronic vans (i.e., less than three hours travel and less than100 miles). Thereafter an optimisation model will be built using mathematical programming. Based on the analysis of the problem structure, optimisation and heuristics will be developed to solve the model efficiently.

UK Masters degree (with average programme mark of no less than 65%) or International equivalent. English Language requirement of IELTS band 7.0 or above with not less than 7.0 in each component.

Funding Notes

The studentship provides a tax free stipend of £15009 per annum for the duration of the studentship plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate. International (non EU) students may apply however the total value of the studentship will be used towards the cost of the International tuition fee in the first instance.
