This project has the chance to change lives by improving manufacturing processes and the way we manufacture. Collaborative robots are increasing in manufacturing but to work with them we need to develop more advanced handling methodologies and technology. This studentship will have the opportunity to focus on the research and development of flexible adaptable handling within a number of possible environments including but not limited to: logistics, healthcare, biological materials, construction, aerospace, automotive, and space.

Full Project Detail:
The studentship has the opportunity to work within the Intelligent Automation Centre (IAC) (www.intelligent-automation.org.uk) which is a Multidisciplinary Centre for Advanced Robotics and Digital Automation. The work will build upon world leading research in Electrostatic Adhesion and Soft Robotics, for which manufacturing processes and testing environments have been established at IAC. The fundamental modelling and control investigation will be underpinned with the development of prototype, proof of concept experimental validation.

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, at least a 2:1 Honours degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical/Manufacturing/Electrical Engineering/ Automation, applied Mathematics or a related subject. A relevant Master’s degree and/or experience in one or more of the following will be an advantage: Mechanical, Robotics/Computer Science or Control Engineering.

The studentship will provide a tax-free stipend of £15,285 p/a, plus tuition fees at the UK/EU rate (currently £4,407 p/a). While we welcome applications from non-EU nationals, please be advised that it will only be possible to fund the tuition fees at the international rate and no stipend will be available.
