About the Project

EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Topological Design We have up to 10 fully-funded PhD studentships available in the EPSRC CDT in Topological Design at the University of Birmingham. The Centre offers a range of interdisciplinary research projects involving topological design and applied topology, with world-leading supervisors in a range of STEMM fields.

Our research projects cover a range of disciplines in Engineering and Physical Science, and our current/available projects include, but are not limited to:

• Topology optimisation and topological design for additive manufacturing applied to medical implants or quantum technology devices.

• Topological materials such as quantum systems of cold atoms displaying synthetic spatial dimensions, and topological photonic metamaterials.

• Topological data analysis-based imaging techniques applied to protein measurement in super-resolution microscopy.

Our Programme • 1-year taught programme introducing topological sciences through interdisciplinary modules.

• 3-year cutting-edge research project in specialist research teams with world-leading research profiles and facilities, with themes in:

o Quantum physics and Technology

o Mechanical and Vibrational Engineering

o Electromagnetism and Photonics

o Manufacturing and 3D printing

o Soft Matter and Chemistry

o Health and Life Sciences

• A paid internship with an industrial or academic partner working in a field related to your research area.

Admissions will be open until 5th Jan 2022.

Application procedure: We are now accepting applications for the first round of recruitment for our fourth cohort of students starting in September 2022. Recruitment is open to both home and overseas applicants, and the deadline is 10th January 2022. Instructions on how to fill in an application can be found on our webpage.

What we are looking for in candidates:

• No prior knowledge of Topology or its applications is required!

• An undergraduate degree in Physics, Materials, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Mathematics, Chemistry, or other related disciplines with at least 2(i) honours or equivalent.

• An interest in interdisciplinary sciences and engineering, with enthusiasm for communication.

• Demonstrated mathematical ability appropriate to the undergraduate discipline.

• We recommend international students apply as early as possible as we have limited places for international students and competition is likely to be high.
