Photodynamic treatment of reservoirs to eliminate taste and odours from blue-green algae

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) proliferate in the summer and autumn with their growth linked to elevated nutrients and water temperatures. They are an increasing problem in fresh water supplies producing both toxins and compounds which impart unacceptable taste and odours. This PhD project will use new LED light technologies to target blue-green algae in drinking water reservoirs before it reaches the water treatment plant to remove the need for expensive treatment. Initial work will be based in the laboratory then extended through pilot studies in drinking water reservoirs. You would be joining a vibrant research group with international collaborations which will allow testing of the developed technologies in diverse environments. Another key aspect of the work will be developing and refining rapid analytical techniques along with in situ sampling methods. This work presents an exciting opportunity for a truly multidisciplinary research project supporting future developments to allow efficient water resource management. The successful candidate will also benefit from training provided through the Hydro Nation Scholarship Programme.
