About the Project

We are looking for a PhD candidate to conduct a project investigating the physical activity levels of disabled children in Auckland, New Zealand. This study will assess the activity levels of children and adolescents from five to 20 years of age using a variety of tools. The information gathered will expand our understanding of the current health of disabled children, and identify target populations for exercise interventions aimed at increasing physical activity levels and consequently quality of life.

The objectives of this project are:

1) To evaluate the levels and type of physical activity children with disabilities in the Auckland area engage with.
2) To assess enablers and barriers to participation in physical activity in this population.

Funding notes:

If you have a GPA of 8.0 or more and you completed your most recent qualifying programme at a New Zealand university, you’ll be supported throughout your PhD study by a University of Auckland Doctoral Scholarship. If your GPA is less than 8.0, there may still be scholarships available - you can discuss this with your potential supervisor or the academic director.

There are no international fees for PhD students: as long as you live in New Zealand during your period of enrolment, and even if you initially start your PhD from overseas, you will pay the same as New Zealanders.

Funding Notes

You should have a a Masters, Honours or equivalent degree in a health or education-related area. A background in exercise physiology or physiotherapy, and experience with children, will be a plus.
