Project Description

Fruit- and plant- derived polyphenols have been suggested to improve metabolic health and function function in a range of inflammatory and chronic diseases such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and cardiovascular disease. There is also a growing body of evidence that such phytonutrients can reduce pain, soreness and functional recovery after eccentric exercise, a model of local inflammation, cellular damage, and insulin resistance. The aim of the present project is to perform a series of metabolic physiology studies in healthy human participants aimed at investigating the ability of novel phytonutrients to suppress inflammation and improve glucose tolerance and skeletal muscle function during recovery from physical exercise.
