About the Project

Place-based community events, especially those staged in neighbourhoods that have experienced territorial stigmatisation can fulfil important community functions. Internally, such events can provide opportunities for people from diverse communities and cultures to encounter each other, to participate in pleasurable activities in convivial settings and to develop mutual understanding. Facilitated through place-based community events, habitual fleeting encounters can produce sustained benefits including the production of positive emotions and familiarity towards others. However, these events can also exacerbate tensions, highlighting power imbalances, intolerances and inequalities that exist in communities that have been subject to stigmatisation. In this project we want to explore the impact of place-based community festivals, longitudinally, in addressing narratives of territorial stigma.

Programme Start Date: 1st October 2023
