Plasmon Modulation in 2D Nanomaterials

Project Description

This project will explore the ability to modulate the optical properties of 2D Nanomaterials, in the vis-NIR region of the EM spectrum, using charge injection. To do this we will use our recently developed "worlds thinnest free standing gold" as the 2D material of interest and couple this with routes for charge injection and optical characterisation.

Firstly, you will learn how to fabricate and characterise the 2D materials. In particular you will develop routes for controlling the lateral dimensions of the 2D materials and determining their optical properties. We will compare the optical properties with theoretical predictions for idealised systems. Secondly, you will develop a method for controlling charge injection into these structures

Funding Notes

UK/EU – EPSRC Studentship for 3.5 years paying academic fees and maintenance. UK applicants are eligible for a full award paying tuition fees and maintenance. EU applicants are eligible for Fees only, except in exceptional circumstances, or where residency has been established for more than 3 years prior to the start of the course.  Funding is awarded on a competitive basis.
