The Age of Revolutions in many respects forged the modern era, especially in political thought. Revolutionary change shook political, intellectual, cultural, social, and economic aspects of life in the Atlantic World to the core. The Enlightenment, the American, French, and Haitian Revolutions, and changes in identity and cultural expression all reflected the emergence of new ideologies, fuelled by the spread of revolutionary interpretations of the sovereignty of the people. There remains much to explore about political thought in this era across the political spectrum.
The revolutionary political thought of this era remains influential on political thought and memory today. Appeals to the Founding Fathers and to Liberty, Equality, Fraternity are made regularly by leading politicians, while many conservatives continue to view this era’s revolutionary ideas as the root of what is wrong with the modern world.
Applicants interested in the history of political thought in the Anglophone world and France during the Age of Revolutions – whether revolutionary or reactionary – and/or its influence on modern politics and memory are particularly welcome, as are those interested in a transnational approach. A good BA and MA in history or a cognate discipline are required.
