About This PhD Project

Project Description

Applications are invited for a PhD studentship to study intermicrobial interactions and their implications for health and disease. It is now recognised that several human microbial infections arise from polymicrobial biofilms that can be found at common sites throughout the human body. The objectives of this project are to utilise genetic-, biochemical- and cell culture-based techniques to determine the molecular mechanisms of interplay between oral microorganisms, and to determine the outcomes of such interactions on microbial colonisation, biofilm formation and pathogenesis. The student will be based in the School of Oral & Dental Sciences and will work within the Oral Microbiology research group. This provides an excellent opportunity to develop a wide range of interdisciplinary skills within a vibrant research team addressing significant biomedical problems.
Candidates should have a BSc Hons degree at the level of 2.1 or above in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or related sciences. The student will be jointly supervised by Dr Angela Nobbs ([email protected]) and Professor Howard Jenkinson ([email protected]). Interested applicants are invited to contact either supervisor for further information or discussion prior to application.
When applying please select "PhD in Oral and Dental Sciences" within the Faculty of Health Sciences.
