Power-to-Liquids (PtL) to produce clean jet-fuels

About This PhD Project

Project Description

We aim at creating a Power-to-Liquids (PtL) technology for the SAF+ Consortium ( to implement in Québec based on a compact, modular, electricity driven system to convert CO2 from industrial combustion emissions into jet fuels. The reactive process is two-fold: 1) Reversed water gas shift (RWGS) and 2) Fischer Tropsch process (FTP). The focus of the R&D project will be 1) process integration of the reactive steps 1 and 2 with the intermediate and downstream distillation units and 2) catalyst design and process design for both steps 1 and 2. The deliverables are: i) an integrated plant conceptual design for the process above; ii) a new class of advanced catalysts that maximize the selectivity towards iii) SAF+ jet fuel.

Description of position:
We are looking for a PhD student starting in 2020, who will be supported for (3) years. A summary of the activities and desired expertise follows:

• Design of gas-solid reactors
• Techno-economic analysis
• Process engineering and plant integration
• Control and data acquisition
• Set-up and operation of lab scale reactors
• Catalysts design and synthesis at the lab scale
• Catalyst characterization
• Density functional theory (DFT) calculations
• Statistical modelling (and machine learning)

The required credentials are a Master’s in a Chemical Engineering or Industrial Chemistry. Candidates with diplomas in Mechanical, Physical, Energy, Nuclear and Material Engineering might be considered. Both PhD students must have strong manual abilities and interpersonal skills to work in big and diverse team and possibly good written and communication skills in English.
The applicants must be strongly motivated for and be able to work independently and play the role of leaders to steer the project towards the commercial objectives.
