Psychotic disorders are among the most expensive disorders in terms of quality of life and societal cost. Early identification and treatment of psychotic disorders significantly improves their clinical outcome. This study has two main focuses.
This project focuses on prediction of outcomes among people at clinical-high-risk for psychosis (CHR). Accurate individualised prediction would facilitate early and targeted treatment of CHR people who are at highest risk of developing psychotic disorder and poor functional outcome, reducing the potential impacts of the illness. We now have evidence for a set of biomarker proteins which can predict transition from the CHR to psychosis (Mongan et al 2020). Wellcome Flagship funding has been secured for our project, IMPETUS, which aims to replicate this work. The PhD candidate will work as part of this ‘parent’ study team focusing on the distinct areas of prediction of persistence of psychotic experiences (PEs) and on functional outcome.
