About the Project

Neonatal infectious arthritis is a severe and common disease of neonatal lambs which causes significant pain and suffering, substantial economic loss, and is a principle reason for antibiotic use in the sheep industry.

This project is a collaborative partnership with University of Liverpool, Moredun Research Institute and AHDB Beef and Lamb. The aim is to examine the disease in terms of sources, routes of transmission, and drivers in order to identify potential vaccine candidates and inform evidenced based strategies for disease prevention on farm.

The student will acquire a diverse range of research skills from the multi-disciplinary supervisory team. Time will be spent in the field, on affected sheep farms collecting sample material and epidemiological data, supervised by experienced veterinary surgeons. Laboratory work will involve microbiological culture techniques, pathogen identification using Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization- Time of Flight Mass Spectrometry (MALDI-TOF) and PCRs, and whole genome sequencing. Analytical skills acquired include epidemiology and bioinformatics, where bespoke training will be provided. The student will have the opportunity to spend time at the world renowned Moredun Research Institute conducting preliminary vaccine trials. The project includes placement at AHDB Beef and Lamb where the student will gain experience in communication of science, achieving impact, business skills and working in the agricultural industry.
