Project Description

Technologies and our economy in general, usually advance either by incremental developments or by quantum leaps. Disruptive technologies, behind such revolutions, are usually characterised by universal, versatile applications, which change many aspects of our lives simultaneously, penetrating every corner of our existence. Graphene has numerous unique properties which have the potential to transform innumerable applications.

It has many versatile uses in energy, ranging from flexible solar cells to ultra-high conductivity thermal management sheets for electronics. Its use in photonics and flexible electronics has the potential to impact everyday life by enabling very high data transfer rates and transforming human-computer interfaces. Biomedical applications such as targeted drug delivery, biosensors, imaging and diagnostics can enhance our quality of life. We are developing new and innovative routes for manufacturing high quality graphene and applying it in a very wide range of devices.

As a contributing member of our group you will work on aspects of this research which complement your own experience and expertise. The project is multi-disciplinary, bringing together fundamental chemistry, process modelling and engineering design. Thus we aim to involve researchers from a wide range of disciplines including chemistry, chemical engineering and computer modelling. Only by considering all of these elements and working together as a team can we rapidly develop and implement graphene based products.

This PhD project is initially offered on a self-funded basis. It is open to applicants with their own funding, or those applying to funding sources. However, excellent candidates will be eligible to be considered for a University scholarship.

Students applying should have (or expect to achieve) a minimum 2.1 undergraduate degree in a relevant engineering/science or education discipline. Candidates with Masters level are preferred, but exceptional candidates at Bachelors level can also be considered.
