About the Project

Stagnating crop yields worldwide have renewed interest in the role of soil management in sustainable farming systems as the climate changes. As the successful PhD candidate, you will investigate the tools currently being used by farmers to evaluate soil health by using cutting-edge scientific physical, biological and chemical analysis, combined with an understanding of the needs and expectations of farming businesses. The BASF AgBalance software will be used to compare the value of selected and calibrated soil health tools in cropping systems in climate transect across Europe. With an understanding of the science and market place, you will inform the development of effective tools for farmers to enhance the profitability of their businesses by improving soil health.

The successful candidate will be based at Rothamsted Research and will be co-supervised by collaborators from the University of Reading. The project will be funded by BASF. A senior manager from the company will co-supervise the successful candidate enabling him/her to develop an understanding of how outputs from science can be translated into practical solutions for farmers.

Funding Notes

Each student will be supported by the tax-free stipend (£14,777 in 2018/19), typically for 3 years. In addition, for eligible students, the award will cover fees for EU/UK nationals and a Research and Training Grant to fund their research, conference attendance and networking.

Applicants should hold a minimum of a UK Honours Degree at 2:1 level or equivalent in subjects relevant subject area.
