The University of Nottingham’s Propulsion Futures Beacon of Excellence is an interdisciplinary initiative involving researchers from the Faculty of Engineering, School of Physics and Astronomy and the School of Chemistry. The Beacon aspires in providing the ‘propulsion system of the future’, based on translation of sustainable materials to devices and propulsion systems, which will ultimately enable responsible and carbon-neutral transport in the aerospace, automotive and marine sectors. The research activities within the Beacon are across 7 Visions: Onboard Energy, Energy Carrying Systems, Sustainable and Greener Materials for Propulsion Systems, Fully Integrated Generation Systems, Disruptive Technologies and Advanced Propulsors. The Beacon is home to around 100 academic, postdoctoral and PhD students with expertise in a range of multidisciplinary and cross disciplinary research areas. Our students are supervised by a passionate group of academics, postdocs and technicians. To contribute and build on our existing success and expand our postgraduate community, we are looking to recruit high calibre and enthusiastic students from Engineering, Physics and Chemistry backgrounds who have a strong interest in Materials, Energy, Aerospace areas to undertake doctoral-level study. You will work with an exciting team of academics who will provide access to state of the art equipment, consumables and cutting edge supervision. Our self-funded studentships offer a unique opportunity to study in a multidisciplinary and diverse environment, which also provides access to some of the best equipped labs and expertise in the UK. Our academics and researchers are collaborating with businesses and organisations to pioneer ways of moving people and goods – and reduce our dependency on fossil fuels. The successful commercial exploitation of the Beacon’s research will deliver cutting edge technology to tackle the mounting environmental, economic, social and political challenges and will pave the way for a revolution in transport.
