The Carnegie School of Sport and the International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE) are offering a full-time PhD studentship - starting October 2019. The closing date for applications is midnight on 19th May 2019
The award provides a stipend of £15,009 per annum (pro-rata into 12 monthly payments and exempt from UK Income Tax and National Insurance) and UK/EU Fees paid for a period of three years (starting October 2019). It is a requirement that the successful applicant will be based full-time at our Headingley Campus or as otherwise directed when required.
We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic student who will fully engage in the dynamic and vibrant research environment in the Carnegie School of Sport. The quality of the Carnegie School of Sport research is evident in the outstanding results achieved in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, where we ranked 2nd nationally when accounting for both research quality and the number of contributing staff (Sport and Exercise Sciences, Leisure and Tourism).
This PhD studentship is directly related to the outputs and deliverables of the recently awarded Erasmus+ co-funded project CoachForce21: Enhancing the Role, Responsibility and Status of Sport Coaches in 21st Century Europe. This project is led by Leeds Beckett and the International Council for Coaching Excellence and directed by Dr Sergio Lara-Bercial.
The successful candidate will embark on a research programme that will consider the current state of affairs in the European Union (EU) in relation to the professionalisation and representation of sport coaching, the associated challenges and the potential solutions. Outputs of the project will include an internationally agreed position statement on the professionalisation of coaching in the EU and a set of guidance and support tools for member states, sport federations and coach development organisations.
In addition, the student will be expected to support ICCE’s contribution to Erasmus+ related project PEAK Coaching led by the International Council for Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE). PEAK’s main objective is to improve the development and governance of coaching systems in the EU.
