About the Programme

The University of Bristol is offering ONE PhD scholarship (3 years full-time) commencing October 2020. These studentships are funded through the NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR) and NIHR Applied Research Collaboration West (ARC West)

The NIHR School for Public Health Research (SPHR) is a unique collaboration between leading academic centres in England. Established in 2012, NIHR SPHR aims to conduct high quality research to build the evidence base for effective public health practice. Our research looks at what works practically to improve population health and reduce health inequalities, can be applied across the country, and better meets the needs of policymakers, practitioners and the public.

The School provides a setting where PhD students can benefit from the leadership of researchers at the top of their field and extensive networks with public health policy and practice and where supplementary training, networking, mentoring, guidance and collaboration between members are part of the added value that the School environment brings. The School is committed to building capacity in public health research by providing a range of multidisciplinary training and development opportunities.

NIHR ARC West is a partnership between the organisations and individuals that provide, plan and support health and social care in the West of England alongside the public that use these services and four local Universities, each with a world leading reputation in research to support better health and social care services and improvements in patient and public health. ARC West provides a supportive training environment where PhD students have support and leadership from leading researchers and supervisors, access to supplementary training, and benefit from being embedded within a regional collaboration of health and care providers, and within the national ARC network.

We welcome applications from prospective students interested in the below topic:

Psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on NHS staff (lead supervisor Professor Paul Moran)

Background

ARC West is contributing staff data towards a national study of the psychosocial impact of the pandemic on frontline NHS staff (‘NHS Check’, led by King’s College London). The student will have access to the ARC West dataset (which will include staff recruited from one participating acute trust and one participating mental health trust). Quantitative data will be collected from all participating staff on: sociodemographic status, occupational and social support available, the General Health Questionnaire work experience, caring demands, resilience, wellbeing, alcohol use, suicidal ideation, burnout, moral injury and fatigue. Staff will be followed-up at 3, 6 and 12 months from baseline and so in addition to cross-sectional data, the student will in principle also have access to longitudinal data. In addition, a purposive sample of staff from a range of occupational groups and settings, will be interviewed in order to explore their experiences of working during the pandemic in greater depth. Data analysis will occur simultaneously with data collection continuing until a diverse sample has been included and consistent data are emerging. As above, some participants may be followed-up at additional timepoints. Interviews will be audiotaped and transcribed verbatim. Likely methods of analysis will be thematic content analysis with constant comparison and/or case study approaches.

This study will shed important new light on the mental health of healthcare workers during this uniquely testing time for the NHS.
