Psychology PhD: Is a picture worth a thousand words? The representation of meaning in comic books.

Project Description

In recent years comic books and graphic novels have become increasingly part of mainstream culture. Given the popularity of comics as a visual medium for conveying complex narratives and abstract ideas it is clearly important to understand what underpins the construction of and engagement with such material. However, the academic study of comic books has been mostly theoretical and whilst these ideas are compelling, there is little empirical exploration of the visual language used in comics particularly from a cognitive psychological perspective. Consequentially there is broad scope for further investigation using rigorous experimental methods. The aims of this Ph.D. project are to investigate the production and comprehension of representations of meaning in comic book formats. This could include such conventions used in the depiction of speed, passage of time and meaning inference across comic book panels. These aspects would be investigated from both readers’ and creators’ perspectives. This project will give the successful candidate the opportunity to contribute to an emerging field of investigating comic books from a psychological perspective.
