Applicants may apply for both posts, and should they choose to do so, they should submit only a single application, showing as appropriate their interest in and suitability for the different PhD foci.
We welcome applications from those with either a social science undergraduate degree or masters degree, and from candidates from other disciplines who can demonstrate relevant research interests, commitment and skills.

PhD2, Women’s grassroots organisations and mobilisations (King’s College London)
Will, in broad terms, explore the priorities and activities of diverse grassroots women’s organisations/civil society. This could be a comparative project (Belgium, Poland, Portugal, Sweden and the UK) or a single country study of the UK. It will be informed by feminist and other critical approaches to the study of grassroots mobilisation, advocacy, social media activism and democracy, and theories of political participation and social movement theory. This PhD might also make use of innovative qualitative digital methodologies to investigate the affective political representation of diverse women.
Generic QUALREP Project Briefing for PhD
QUALREP is a five-year, £6 million research project. Originally awarded by the European Research Council (ERC), it is funded by UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). Over five years, through thick comparison involving qualitative and quantitative methods, it will identify the conditions under which women, and especially marginalized and minoritized women, are well represented in and by through representative democracy. In sum, it explores the ways in which, and by (and for) whom, formal politics can be made more inclusive and representation, and a more gender equal and stronger democratic system and society be realized. It interrogates processes of representation – the institutions, actors, procedures of democratic deliberation and decision making in particular places – in addition to representative outcomes to illuminate the quality of representation. In its innovative methodological approach, it sets a research agenda for the next generation of politics and gender and representation/democracy scholars.
Eligibility criteria:
In addition to standard requirements for the University of Edinburgh PhD Politics programme or the King’s College London Applied Public Policy programme, applicants must meet the following additional eligibility criteria for this award:
- Be enthusiastic about (gaining) qualitative and quantitative methods training at an advanced level
- Agree to audit both qualitative and quantitative methods training in line with whole team training requirements
- Collaborate in data collection and analysis – both quantitative and qualitative - and co-authorship with other the other PhD, post-docs, and CI and PIs, as per reasonable requests from the QUALREP PIs
- A commitment to feminist philosophies of social science and to feminist research practices
- A willingness to learn the skills of impactful research
- Where students have a non-social science degree we would expect indications of relevant research interests, commitment, and skills.

4. A 2 page personal statement setting out - in response to the QUALREP Briefing included above- the following:
